Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Wajdi Mouawad’s award-winning play about a pair of Montreal twins compelled to return to their dying mother’s Middle Eastern homeland is a finely crafted piece of cinema. But, perhaps owing to its roots on the stage, Incendies feels as contrived as it does accomplished. The script’s ultimate, metaphorically loaded revelations of familial trauma hit with less force for being so carefully telegraphed in advance.
