Alberta’s capital will be officially in the pole position for Indy Car racing in Canada for the next three years after a deal was reached between Northlands and the racing circuit.
The Indy Car Series will make Edmonton its only Canadian stop during its 2008 schedule on July 26, in a race that is expected to attract drivers like 2007 rookie standout Marco Andretti, female racer Danica Patrick and Indianapolis 500 winner Scott Dixon.
American open wheel racing will return to Edmonton after the IndyCar Series merged with the Champ Car World Series last winter.
“We knew this was a great Champ Car venue, so when we looked at bringing these two series together, one of the first considerations was what events make sense to really blend together as quickly as we can,” said Indy spokesman Perry Angstadt.
“Edmonton was high on the list and that’s why we could not be more pleased that we were able to do that.”
More than 167,000 fans flocked to the Rexall Speedway for the Champ Car Edmonton stop, the Grand Prix of Edmonton, last year.
