Infant in critical condition

A baby girl is in critical condition in a Richmond hospital with symptoms consistent with shaken baby syndrome after staff at her daycare put her down for a nap and couldn’t wake her up again.

The one-year-old attends the Strong Start early learning centre at Mitchell Elementary School on Cambie Road, RCMP Cpl. Jennifer Pound said yesterday.

“The baby was in the care of another caregiver who brought her to the Strong Start centre (on Tuesday),” Pound said.

“(She) appeared fine and just after lunch (went) down for a nap. When the staff and caregiver attempted to wake her after a short time, she would not wake up.”

The baby was taken to hospital, where doctors determined her symptoms were consistent with shaken baby syndrome — a diagnosis that has not been confirmed.

“Richmond RCMP would like to reassure the public that there is no immediate danger to other children attending Mitchell Elementary School or the Strong Start early learning centre,” said Pound.

“At this point, there is no suspect in custody. However, the investigation is in the very early stages and many people have and will be interviewed.”

Strong Start was closed for the day yesterday.
