Video footage of YVR’s international meet-and-greet area, taken at the time of Robert Dziekanski’s death, provides almost no sign of the chaos going on behind the glass partition where the Polish immigrant died.
The grainy surveillance footage was played yesterday at the Braidwood inquiry into Dziekanski’s death.
It showed a predominantly quiet section of the arrivals lounge from 1 a.m. to 2 a.m., while RCMP officers, paramedics and firefighters struggled behind a frosted glass door to revive Dziekanski after he was Tasered by police.
The video shows Dziekanski was Tasered within one minute of the officers’ arrival, while Richmond Fire and Rescue arrived on the scene 13 minutes later.
The inquiry also listened to a translation of the audiotape recorded minutes before Dziekanski died.
Translator Kris Barski told the inquiry that Dziekanski, who only spoke Polish, swore, asked to be left
alone and wanted to know how long he would be waiting. Barski also said Dziekanski threatened to wreck the arrivals area.
