Inventor seeks business help

Q: I’ve got a great invention idea for a catering product. How would I go about the research to create this product? I know I’m the ‘little guy’ in a world of overnight invention sensations endorsed by celebrities, so I’m a little apprehensive about the chances of my product succeeding. Any resources you could provide me with would be great, Jill.

—Michael Wilson

A: Thanks for writing in, Michael. The first step is you’ve got to remove that apprehension. If you don’t have the confidence in your product no one else will. Research your idea and register a domain.

Connect with the Inventor’s Alliance of Canada (www.inventorsalliance.com). This will put you in touch with fellow inventors and professionals like product suppliers, designers, and bankers. You’ll learn about how to run your small business. The organization hosts regular meetings with the next one scheduled for Aug. 7.

You want to get thoughts from others, but don’t share too much of that idea! Get their thoughts on how it would work, how much they’d be willing to pay, and how it might be marketed. This type of information will help you create a competitive business plan for approaching your bank or private lending institution for financial support.
