Iraq interested in buying Czech planes

PRAGUE – Iraq’s defence minister says his country would like to acquire Czech-made subsonic L-159 military airplanes.

Abdul-Qadir al-Obeidi said Monday after meeting his Czech counterpart Alexandr Vondra that Iraq is “very interested” in making a deal soon with the Czechs. He didn’t give details.

Vondra said “dozens of planes” are at stake. It was not immediately clear what the deal would be worth or when it could be struck.

A year ago, Vondra announced the Czech Republic’s military was negotiating a possible sale of 36 of the L-159 light combat and training planes that it no longer needed to Iraq.

Al-Obeidi said Iraq also wants to buy new planes. He is scheduled to visit its maker, Aero Vodochody, just north of Prague later on Monday.
