DUBLIN (Reuters) – Health officials have told the Irish government that tighter COVID-19 restrictions should be introduced before the end of the year, Prime Minister Micheal Martin said on Thursday.

The National Public Health Emergency Team “will be recommending to government that we would bring in restrictions before the end of the year” and the government will take the recommendation “very seriously,” Martin said in an interview on state broadcaster RTE.

He said officials were recommending restrictions on the hospitality sector and on the number of visitors people can have to their homes.
