Is Black Friday worth the drive?

Hordes of shoppers, including thousands of Canadians, are gearing up to spend their hard-earned money south of the border during America’s largest shopping event of the year.

Black Friday, a shopper’s haven on the last Friday of November, coincides with Thanksgiving in the United States. It offers the best deals on anything from big-ticket items such as TVs and appliances to clothing and accessories.

Black Friday enthusiast, Danielle Graydon who embarks on the journey to Bellevue, Wash. every year with family, says the event is a good place to finish Christmas shopping in one trip.

“Last year I got all my Christmas shopping done for $350,” she said. “At some stores you’ll get discount on top of discount. The trip is worth it because you end up saving hundreds.”

According to a Canadian poll, close to one in five Canadians will participate in the shopping frenzy.

This year deals include: a 46” HD TV for $298 at Target which normally retails for $548; a Kenmore washer and dryer for $469.99 each which retails in Canada for approximately $699 and $0.99 DVDs at Best Buy.

Compared to Black Friday, Graydon describes Boxing Day as “a pathetic” alternative to America’s busiest shopping day.

“If you have the patience to deal with large lines, it’s totally worth it,” Graydon said.
