Orange-eyed White Persian Gemkin Starwind dominated this year’s Supreme Cat Show, one of the world’s biggest titles, securing the “Supreme Exhibit” title for the second straight year at the event in Birmingham, England. It continues an astonishing run of competition wins for Gemkin, and his owner Jenny Nicholas was thrilled.

Metro: What gave Gemkin the edge?

Nicholas: It’s his demeanor and personality, he’s such a showman and he just works it. There were 10 persians in the adult category with at least five serious contenders but he just gives it that little bit more when it matters. He has a wonderful personality and nothing phases him.

Has he developed a keen competitive instinct?

He senses the occasion right from the start. He has won shows so many times he just knows it all and likes the attention.

How do you train or prepare him?

We assess all kittens from four weeks old and it’s vital to handle them every day at that stage. They have to be used to it, and need that personality where they are happy to be groomed and combed.

How fierce was the contest: were there any attempts at sabotage?

Quite fierce but you have to rise above the unpleasantness, and Gemkin has a huge amount of support as he has become very well known.

Will there be commercial opportunities, and could he become the next ‘Grumpy Cat’?

As long as he’s happy and properly cared for. We were approached for the Harry Potter film: we had to decline as we were not sure how the conditions would be. But he’s such a showman, and he may appear in adverts soon.

How did you reward Gemkin?

He’s the king in our house. He eats turkey, beef and chicken every day, he eats better than me. He might get extra now, and a few more toys.
