Don’t even bother wiping that sweat from your brow today, New Yorkers. Resistance is futile, especially as temperatures are expected to hit the mid-90s, with the most extreme heat hitting this afternoon.
A National Weather Service heat advisory is in effect throughout the area until 6 p.m. tonight, and residents are encouraged to stay hydrated and limit strenuous activity if possible.
While it would be lovely to spend all day sitting directly in front of the air conditioner — or spending the day in one of the city’s many pools — that is not an option for many New Yorkers.
For those who may not have AC in their homes, the city has dozens of designated “cooling centers” throughout all five boroughs, so chances are there’s a respite nearby. The centers are libraries, senior and youth centers or NYCHA facilities.
One such cooling center, the Leonard Library at 81 Devoe St. in Brooklyn, saw a lot more patrons than usual yesterday, and today is sure to be no different.
“We have AC working, and we’re happy to welcome everyone,” a representative told Metro.
The senior center at Independence Plaza, located at 310 Greenwich St. in Manhattan, has seen little change in attendance beyond its regulars during this week’s high temperatures, a representative said.
For those who work outdoors, the NWS recommends frequent rest breaks in the shade, and all New Yorkers are encouraged to remain hydrated and check on vulnerable friends and family today.
