Is NYC’s hottest restaurant in a Columbia dorm?

Two weeks ago, economics student Jonah Reider, a Columbia University senior, opened Pith, a New American restaurant in his college dorm room that is currently booked for the coming month, the New York Post reported.

“I didn’t expect it to be so popular,” Reider, 21, said in the Post report, where he added, “My roommates are chill with it.”

For four nights every week, he serves four visitors a five- to eight-course dinner prepared in the common kitchen in his suite at Hogan Hall, according to the Post, which also claimed he takes reservations via Yelp, and both students and “randos” are welcome to dine at Pith in the communal space he shares with three roommates.

The menu can feature such specialty items as artisanal cheeses, house-pickled red kale stalks, olives, seared lamb chops with smoked paprika, and snow peas with pancetta and maitake mushrooms, the Post reported.

Reider is quickly getting well-known, but he’s not getting rich, according to the Post article, as he charges just $10 to $20 per dinner.

“There’s no curtain between the kitchen and the living room, and I’m not in an apron or something,” Reider said in a related Columbia Spectator article. “And it’s very much intended to be whoever comes over will have a great time and hopefully will spend some time with me, too.”
