It’s OK to dine on swine, officials say

Go ahead and ham it up, the provincial government says.

The Agriculture Department said yesterday Nova Scotians have no reason to worry about what’s in their pork chops. The reassurance comes after a couple hundred pigs in Alberta were found to be infected with Influenza A (H1N1), also known as swine flu, over the weekend.

Humans cannot get swine flu from eating pork products and it’s rare for the virus to move from live pigs to humans, the department says.

The Health Promotion and Protection Department also confirmed five new mild cases of swine flu yesterday, bringing the total number of reports up to 38 across the province since April 26.
