Jackpot follows B.C. man’s fortune cookie

A Maple Ridge man laid off last year from his job of 15 years is B.C.’s newest millionaire.

Richard Batitis, a father of four, played his late father’s numbers in the Sept. 15 Lotto 6/49 draw and won the $6.5-million jackpot. He said he knew his luck was changing when he opened a fortune cookie message that said, “You will go through a big life change.”

“I’ve been living with wife and four kids in my in-law’s basement,” Batitis said. “We’ve been struggling to get by. It’s nice not to have to worry anymore.”
