Jaguars bring back Coughlin in front office shake-up

(Reuters) – The Jacksonville Jaguars made major changes to their front office on Monday, promoting Doug Marrone from interim headcoach to the full-time position and hiring former coach Tom Coughlin as executive vice president of football operations.

The team also signed General Manager Dave Caldwell to a two-year contract extension.

Marrone, 52, finished the season as the team’s interim coach and went 1-1 after Gus Bradley was fired on Dec. 18.

He will team up with Coughlin, who was Jacksonville’s first coach and is returning to the NFL after ending a 12-year coaching tenure with the New York Giants in 2015.

“I am honored to welcome Tom Coughlin back to Jacksonville, where winning was customary under his leadership,” Jacksonville owner Shad Khan said in a statement.

“With Tom coming in to join Dave and Doug, there is no question the Jacksonville Jaguars are a stronger football team today.”

The Jaguars finished 3-13 in 2016 for their sixth straight losing season, and they have not made the playoffs since 2007.

Coughlin was the Jaguars coach from 1995-2002 before joining the Giants and winning a pair of Super Bowls.

Marrone served as the head coach of the Buffalo Bills in 2013 and 2014, finishing 15-17 in his two years in Buffalo.
