Jammin’ in the League of Rock

Anyone who’s ever fantasized about being a rock star — but has no interest in going the Canadian Idol route — will soon have a chance to realize that dream.

Vancouver’s first-ever rock league is coming to town on July 22.

The organization invites non-professional musicians over age 30 to join a band, jam with pros, record a CD and play gigs around town — all in 10 weeks.

“There’s knitting leagues, Frisbee leagues, football leagues, but there’s never been a rock league for adults,” said Terry Moshenberg, who founded the league three years ago in Toronto.

“These are not rock stars. They know they can string three chords together but want to get their chops back and have no one to play with,” he said.

Members attend workshops with professionals like Vancouver Island-based musician Tal Bachman, son of The Guess Who’s Randy Bachman.

“The League of Rock is the perfect vehicle for someone who’s always fantasized about being in a band or was in a band and wants to get back into it,” Bachman said. “It’s about having fun, getting better and camaraderie.”
