Jaywalker struck and killed

There were 31 steps between two shoes; a black ball cap stayed where it had fallen after being blown from the head of a man struck and killed on a busy Calgary street yesterday.
Chris DuBois was in the vehicle immediately behind the tan GMC truck involved in the incident, and said the victim made it through three lanes of traffic on Blackfoot Trail and 58 Ave SE without even looking, making it all the way to the turning lane when he lost his hat.
The man, believed to be in his 40s, bent down to pick it up, leaving the driver of the truck no time to react.
“What was going through his head, I can’t even begin to think, “ DuBois said. “This is a four lane, go-as-fast-as-you-can kind of place.”
Calgary Police Service Sgt. Doug McIlwraith said the death could have been avoided if he had used a proper pedestrian crossing.
“Jaywalking is, at times, a problem, and he ran across the roadway at a very busy time of day. That was certainly a factor in the collision,” he said.
Leah Somers, an off-duty paramedic, was among the first on the scene to stop and attend to the man, and she didn’t think twice before getting out of her vehicle to lend a hand.
“You don’t even think they’re dead, all you’re thinking is what can I do to help,” she said.
