Jennifer Garner looking to score a hit with Juno

Jennifer Garner’s new film Juno is set to begin production here in mid-February.

Remember Elektra, the 2005 femme fatale flick that starred Jennifer Garner as the butt-kicking superheroine who wields deadly knives? It’s OK to say no, since the Vancouver-shot feature more or less tanked at the box office. So we hope the former Alias star will have better luck with Juno, a coming-of-age comedy set to begin production in mid-February here in Vancouver. Helmed by Jason Reitman (Thank You For Not Smoking), the film also stars Michael Cera (Arrested Development) and tells the story of a teenager faced with an unplanned pregnancy. Garner is now starring in Sony’s Catch And Release, which was also shot in town last year.

Kim Basinger will be in town soon to shoot While She Was Out.

Insight Film Studios is currently in preproduction on the Kim Basinger thriller While She Was Out, the story of a suburban housewife who becomes stranded in a forest full of murderous thugs. The $10-million feature, which begins shooting here in Vancouver on Feb. 5, marks the directorial debut of Susan Montford, a Scottish screenwriter and producer. Put Basinger in the repeat performance category, as she, too, was in B.C. last year to shoot the TV movie The Mermaid Chair.

Tricia Helfer can be found posing in the current issue of Playboy.

Canadian supermodel and Cylon co-conspirator, Tricia Helfer, is turning up the heat everywhere she appears these days. After garnering plenty of exposure in the current issue of Playboy, the Battlestar Galactica star will guest on the Feb. 22 episode of the popular CW Network series Supernatural, in an episode entitled Road Kill. Helfer plays a young woman who is being chased by an amorous and nasty-looking farmer along a rural highway; perhaps not necessarily all that unusual, except that in this case the farmer is a ghost.

Speaking of ghosts and all things Supernatural, the CW production was spotted filming at White Pine Beach late last week, while its sister series, Smallville, filmed at one of the lumber mills in the Queensborough region of Delta at the same time.

Last but not least, if you’re a fan of Campbell River-born star Barry Pepper (Flags Of Our Fathers), you may want to consider making a trip to Victoria in early February for the 13th Annual Victoria Independent Film and Video Festival. Pepper — who has also starred in The Green Mile, Saving Private Ryan and The Snow Walker and is a graduate of Camosun College — will fly into Victoria for the festival, and join talk show host Vicki Gabereau and entertainment personality Terry David Mulligan. Among the other guests will be Daniel O’Connor, director of the film Run Robot Run! which will screen at the festival. The event kicks off Feb. 2 and runs till Feb. 11.
