Antonio Allen is back with the New York Jets, sort of.

The team announced on Monday afternoon that Allen, the safety who injured his Achilles last week and was waived by the team, has cleared waivers and was placed on the team’s Injured Reserve list. Metro New York has learned that Allen is out for the year and has no designation for return.

Last week was a tough go for the Jets secondary as cornerback Dee Milliner was lost for the next two months with an injury to his wrist that required surgery.

The loss of Allen might hurt more than the loss of Milliner, a former first round pick who has struggled to stay on the field. His injury impacts the two-deep of a unit that already was a tad bit thinkas he likely was in the mix right after fellow safeties Marcus Gilchrist and Calvin Pryor. A former linebacker in college, Allen is comfortable in run support and is a good-matchup for the Jets against opposing tight ends.

Over three seasons, Allen has 31 appearances and 18 starts for the Jets. He has amassed 110 career tackles, 2.5 sacks, an interception and a fumble recovery.
