After one of the scariest injuries in recent memory for any New York Jet, linebacker Lorenzo Mauldin put in another day of practice on Thursday but a return to game-action might have to wait another week.

Having suffered a concussion in Week 1 on a play and an injury that originally appeared to be much worse, Mauldin began practicing on Wednesday and returned to the field on Thursday with no setbacks. But while he is back on the field, it is baby steps for the Jets rookie, who the team took in the third round in this past April’s NFL Draft.

Thursday, like the day before, really didn’t involve much that looked like an NFL practice.

“Today was a non-physical practice for me. Not doing any team drills, not having any contact,” Mauldin told Metro.”Working on the simple stuff such asfootwork, hand placement.”

But while momentum is clearly going in the direction of his eventual return, Mauldin still hasn’t returned to a real practice setting yet. He will continue to follow the concussion protocol even though he thinks he might be ready for another step forward on Friday.

“Yes,I feel like I’m doing better and ready to do more,” Mauldin said. “But we have to follow the protocol, the concussion protocol, so I’ll just need to wait and see exactly what is next and when they think I’m ready to take the next step.

“I’ve never had a concussion before, so we’ll just have to wait and see.”

Mauldin got injured on a play where he stripped Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel. He said he doesn’t remember the play.
