The Jets may be without veteran wide receiver Braylon Edwards in their third preseason game as he nurses a leg injury that held him out of practice Thursday.

Edwards ran with the second-team offense last Saturday against the Jaguars as the emergence of Stephen Hill has potentially usurped his role as a red-zone target and third-down wide receiver. He may not be a go for Saturday against the Giants.

Throughout training camp, Edwards has been held out of some sessions to rest ahead of the regular season.

“He’s had a little leg [injury],” head coach Rex Ryan said. “He’s also been on a pitch count.”

New wideout in the mix

Mike Garofolo of Fox Sports 1 reported on Thursday morning that the Jets signed wide receiver Mohamed Massaquoi, who was recently cut by the Jaguars. Massaquoi was a second-round pick of the Browns in 2009 and played in nine games for Cleveland last year with 17 catches for 254 yards and no touchdowns.

“With us, you bring in competition,” Ryan said. “It’s not a traditional signing in this stage of the game because you’re getting a veteran.”

Ryan hailed him as a high character player, likening him to Jerricho Cotchery, a long-time Jet who was a fan favorite for his work ethic and demeanor.

Gates on the mend

After taking a hit that sent him to the ground yesterday, wide receiver Clyde Gates practiced on Thursday with a wrap around his left shoulder. He told Metro he was able to practice with no limitations.

“I should be able to play,” Gates said of his availability for Saturday. “But that’s up to the coaches and other people, not me.”

In addition, quarterback Greg McElroy again practiced with a brace on his left knee and he told Metro he expects to dress for the third preseason game.

Cornerbacks Dee Milliner (calf) and Ellis Lankster (heel) also did not practice. Kenrick Ellis was a scratch as the nose tackle continues to rehab a lower back injury.
