Despite a rocky start to his half a season with the Jets, safety Ed Reed would like to return next year to the team.
Reed signed with the Jets prior to Week 11 and the returns on the investment didn’t appear to be good at first. In the three games immediately after he signed the secondary gave up an average of 25 yards per game more than their prior season average. But in the last month of the season, Reed had three interceptions in the final four games. And the Jets won each game he had an interception.
He’d like to return to the Jets to play for head coach Rex Ryan. The two date back to when Ryan was on the Ravens’ coaching staff earlier in his career.
“If that possibility is there, if the team will allow me and everything goes according to my heart,” Reed said of a Jets return.
A team source tells Metro the Jets would be open for Reed to come back “if the price was right.” One main reason he would be brought back, the source said, is that he has “become invaluable in his mentoring of the young players like Dee Milliner.”
Milliner was the No. 9 overall pick in last April’s NFL Draft and after some early struggles, has played well the last three games.
Reed will have an MRI on Monday before packing up his townhouse and heading home. The MRI is just part of being an NFL veteran who, at 35 years old, just completed his 12th NFL season.
“Total maintenance. I had hip surgery in April, the end of April,” Reed said. “I just want to make sure everything is in tact.”
