General manager John Idzik gave no ringing endorsement to head coach Rex Ryan in his Monday midseason press conference.

In all likelihood, Ryan will be the one to fall on the sword, butIdzik would not comment on the job status of Ryan, the man whose livelihood he affected after another poor draft and a quiet free agency period.

“As it’s been our policy, we won’t judge job status in season,” Idzik said.”We’ll purely focus on the Kansas City Chiefs. We’ll focus on this week. If this league teaches you anything, you look too far in advance and the present will bite. We have enough on our plate for this week and that’s where our focus will be.We’re not going to address job status, we’re addressing the Kansas City Chiefs.”

It was an emotional day for Idzik, who opened his press conference with a 19-minute monologue where he showed some rare emotion and candidness. But he was short on answers or anything remotely like a solution.

Idzik said he’s spent more time with Ryan over the past year than his wife and family. Last year, it was clear Ryan and Idzik had formed an unlikely working relationship that came together well enough to surpass expectations and finish with a surprising 8-8 record.

While he wouldn’t endorse Ryan’s viability as head coach — either short-term or long-term — Idzik did shoulder the blame for the 1-7 season. It remains to be seen if Ryan is exonerated for the record at season’s end.

The Jets players clearly haven’t quit on Ryan, though.

“It starts with me, it starts with me,” Idzik said. “My performance as general manager, everything falls under me. I look at it that way.”
