It’s official. New York City is the place to be for a drink, especially if you’d like that drink to be historically accurate.
“Dead Rabbit is more than the sum of its liquid parts, fusing as it does colourful historical references to the city’s 19th-century Water Street rough-neck pub set and Lower Broadway’s genteel cocktail imbibers in an atmosphere of Irish-American hospitality,” World’s 50 Best Bars wrote about Dead Rabbit.
The list credits co-owners Sean Muldoon and Jack McGarry’s “perfectionism” for a menu of 72 “historically accurate cocktails” at the pub named after a gang of Irish immigrants from the mid-1800s.
The bar, given the top spot on the list by 400 experts, has two floors and maintains the 1800s Irish pub culture, beckoning imaginations to the days when John Morrissey and his gang of Dead Rabbits roamed the area.
Don’t expect 19th century prices, though. A parlor mixed drink will set you back $16; drinking in the taproom will save you a dollar. The taproom offers the widest selection of adult beverages withbeer, wine, bottled punch, spirits, highballs andboilermakers.
If you prefer the teetotaling ways of prohibition days, Dead Rabbit also has a menu of stick-to-your-ribs hearty Irish grub, a raw bar and yes, rabbit.
