Jolly old Richards delivers presents

Some of Vancouver’s newest residents got early Christmas gifts yesterday when legendary big band leader Dal Richards popped by St. Paul’s Hospital dressed as Santa to deliver blankets and toys.

“My daughter was born in this ward 58 years ago,” Richards told Ruth Hartnup as he gave her 12-day-old daughter, Catrin, a pink hand-knitted blanket and stuffed rabbit in the neonatal intensive-care unit.

“She slept through the whole thing, bless her,” Hartnup said. “But I’m sure she’ll be excited to see the pictures next year.”

Richards’ daughter joined her father halfway through the visit — an annual event — to help distribute the gifts, which were courtesy of Variety.

“It’s a pleasure and joy to do it,” Richards said. “Merry Christmas.”
