Jump on board for opera

Opera lovers are in for a treat in the next few weeks as Mercury Opera presents a production on Edmonton’s Queen Riverboat.

The company will be performing scenes from Puccini’s one-act Opera II Tabarro, Aug. 13 and Aug. 15, while incorporating a cruise and bar into the mix. The cast of nearly 50 will perform for the audience members seated on shoreline.

“The whole idea is to present opera in an unusual way,” artistic director and actress Darcia Parada said. “It’s turning opera upside down and hopefully will attract some new audiences.”

The performance is one of betrayal, passion, and a love triangle Parada said. The performance is set to be in real time so it will begin at sunset to complete the experience.

“This story is a slice of real life,” Prada said. “It’s done in a way no one has seen.”

Cast members range from local talent to performers flying in from New York. And with the dates fast approaching, actor Boris Derow said they’re working harder than ever.

“These last few days have been hard work now that the whole cast is finally together,” Derow said. “But, I can’t wait. This has never been seen in Edmonton before and there is some astounding talent.”

The shows begin at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 13 and Aug. 15, tickets can be purchased from TIX on the Square or by calling 780-420-1757.
