Junior beach volleyball championships come to Halifax

The FIVB world junior beach volleyball championships are coming to Halifax in 2011.

The event, which will host 96 teams, male and female, from 30 countries, will be held from Aug. 30 to Sept. 4 on the Halifax Watefront’s Cunard Lot adjacent to the new Nova Scotia Power building.

Organizers say 2,000 tons of sand will be trucked onto the lot using 66 tri-axle trailers, forming six courts with stadium seating, a beer garden and a small athletes village.

Five-day tournament passes will range from $20 to $60.

Sam Schachter and Garrett May, both of Toronto, led Canada to its first-ever junior world beach volleyball gold medal in Alanya, Turkey, in September.

Organizers made the announcement on Tuesday morning in Halifax.
