A Massachusetts Institute of Technology graduate student who went missing while attending a workshop in India was recently found dead.
Kaitlin Goldstein, 28, a fourth-year student at MIT, was found Saturday in a ravine below where she had gone running on June 14, according to MIT. She had not been seen since that day.
Her parents traveled to India to search for her and they said she apparently slipped while running on a loose rock and slid off of a cliff, MIT said in a news release.
Goldstein was studying architecture in MIT’s Building Technology Program. She was in a northern region of India known as Ladakh. She spent a week participating in a workshop on energy and development and was scheduled to help install solar panels for an off-grid electrical installation at a Buddhist monastery.
When she did not return from her run a group of students and instructors where she was studying began to search for her. Indian and American authorities also joined the search and MIT said it hired a private security firm to help Goldstein’s parents search for their daughter.
“As Kate’s family and friends bear this sorrow, we offer them the sympathy and support of the MIT community,” MIT President L. Rafael Reif wrote in an email to the school community. “The death of someone so young and promising is a terrible loss; we should all take time to reach out to those around us.”
MIT is offering counseling services.
