Kathie Lee asks Martin Short about dead wife, apologizes to wrong Martin Short

It’s been an embarrassing day for Kathie Lee Gifford.

In what could very well be the gaffe of the year, Gifford made a humiliating mistake during an interview with actor Martin Short on the “Today Show.” Then, she directed her apology to the wrong Martin Short.

During an interview with Short this morning, Gifford led into what appeared to be an unscripted conversation with him by telling viewers that he has one of the happiest and best marriages in show biz. She went on to ask him, “How many years has it been for you guys?”

Short answered that he and his wife have been married for 36 years. Kathie Lee then playfully teased Short about how he and his wife are still in love and asked, “Why?”

Seems like a charming conversation when you leave out one glaring, elephant-in-the-room factor: Martin Short’s wife, Nancy Dolman, died of ovarian cancer in 2010.

You wouldn’t know it was a touchy subject by watching Short’s composure during the awkward line of questioning. He answered with poise and handled it like a true professional without correcting Kathie Lee and making things even more awkward than they already were.

Once Gifford was alerted to her embarrassing error, she took to Twitter to clear the air, tweeting, “I send my sincerest apologies to @MartinShort and his family. He handled situation w/enormous grace and kindness and I’m so grateful.”

The only problem with that, is @MartinShort is an account with only 81 followers and a history of just one obscure tweet — from 2009. We can’t be 100 percent sure, but when you also consider that Martin Short has stated he has no interest in joining Twitter, we’re assuming that @MartinShort is not his account.

We’re sure Kathie Lee meant her apology, but we’d be quicker to forgive if it had been directed to the correct Martin Short.
