Kelly laments ‘frustrating’ wait for Hurricane Juan relief funds

The cheque is in the mail.

It’s a message repeated over and over again since the federal government promised around $18 million in disaster relief funds for the Halifax Regional Municipality in the wake of Hurricane Juan.

Now, more than six years after the Category 2 storm carved a path of destruction through HRM, the municipality is still waiting for a third of that money.

Mayor Peter Kelly said around $5.4 million is still outstanding, and acknowledged the process of securing the promised funds has been both “complicated” and “frustrating.”

The feds have repeatedly told HRM reviewing all the municipality’s damage claims would take time, added Kelly.

“The auditor is in town now, collecting the final data, and we expect to see the balance in the near future,” he said.

The mayor would not hazard a guess on the exact date, but hinted that the money might arrive in time for Christmas.
