The Billboard Music Awards are over, but their buzz is still rippling through our newsfeed. The show went down in Vegas on Sunday night. Here’s a quick catch up of what you missed.
Demi Lovato speaks out for transgender rights
Demi performed a throwback to her last summertime banger with “Cool for the Summer” while drawing attention to a current cause. The “Confident” songstress wore a gender neutral symbol presumably as a follow-up to her statement against North Caroline’s HB2 law.
Kesha performed the performance that almost never was
As her legal battle with producer Dr. Luke continues, Kesha was finally given a pass from her label to perform a previously planned duet with Ben Folds during the show. The pair performed Bob Dylan’s “It Ain’t Me Babe” to a respectful crowd, leading to a standing ovation.
Madonna paid tribute to Prince
Madonna teamed up with Stevie Wonder for a two-song duet to honor the late great Purple One. She performed “Nothing Compares 2 U” and Purple Rain,” and despite some social media criticism, Madonna declared, “Anyone who wants to do a tribute to Prince is welcome to.” Fair enough.
Celine Dion brought on the waterworks
Closely following the death of her longtime manager, collaborator, and husband Rene Angelil, Celine Dion performed a cover of Queen’s “The Show Must Go On” and accepted the Billboard Icon Award from her son Rene-Charles with a tearful embrace. She said, ““I want to be so strong for my family and my kids, and I didn’t expect that.”
Adele dropped pre-taped music video, trumps live show
The songstress premiered “Send My Love (To Your New Lover),” the latest single from “25.” In it, a Dolce & Gabbana-clad Adele crooned a triumphant farewell to an ex-lover in her new track in this trippy video. We assume following her unfortunate Grammy’s debacle, Adele made sure her next award show appearance was a solid one.
