Kesha has made a triumphant musical return following tumultuous months of a high-profile legal battle with her producer Dr. Luke. The singer is suing Luke, requesting to be released from her recording contract with him following allegations that he drugged, raped and abused her.

The 29-year-old singer hasn’t released a song since appearing on Pitbull’s 2013’s “Timber,” but earlier today dropped a new single, “True Colors,” with Zedd. The studio track collaboration was announced earlier this week, and Kesha first performed the new song during the first weekend of Coachella with the EDM producer as her first public performance since her trial began. “True Colors” will also be the title of Zedd’s upcoming full-length studio release, and he notes on Twitter, “Just to clarify: We didn’t use any loop holes. Kemosabe / RCA gave us permission to release this song!”

Kesha is currently in a multi-album contract to work exclusively with Luke, and earlier this month, her request to be released was denied by New York City’s Supreme Court Judge. Sony’s decision to keep Kesha bound by the contract is to preserve Luke’s Sony-owned label, Kemosabe, from potential damage, should she chose to release music through other channels. Regardless, according to the courts (and Sony), Kesha is free to collaborate with other producers and artists for their own albums. Luke is now suing Kesha for breach of contract and defamation.

According to a statement released by Zedd’s label, Interscope, Kesha says of the new song, “This song spoke to me so deeply that I knew I had to find my own interpretation and record it, to spread the beautiful message of personal empowerment. It gives me hope that I will someday soon be able to release my own album.”
