Kids’ festival brings the rock

The International Children’s Festival in St. Albert is just a stone’s throw away but the attractions are already being put into place.

Kootenay-based stone sculpture artist Stewart Steinhauer was busy moving five of his pieces into their temporary home on the back patio of St. Albert Place yesterday. And with each piece weighing between 5,000 and 9,000 pounds, that was no small feat.

The exhibit is part of this year’s festival and director Nancy Abrahamson said the aboriginal theme fits perfectly with the festival’s native activities.

“They are an incredible added component to our aboriginal portion of the children’s festival,” she said. “We have quite an array of aboriginal activities and we thought, what a great added component for that.”

The five sculptures will be on public display in St. Albert until the end of September.

Steinhauer said the pieces are for sale and range in price from $50,000 to $120,000.

“The pieces have themes that work really well with the children’s festival,” Steinhauer said.

“The pieces are all for sale and I do have negotiations going on in the background but they’ll be there until the fall at least.”

The International Children’s Festival goes June 1-5. For more information, visit www.childfest.com
