Killed workers remembered at memorial

Alberta workers deserve better.

That’s the message Calgarian Julie Hamilton shared yesterday during the 26th annual national Day of Mourning memorial at James Short Park. Hamilton lost her 19-year-old son Tim to a workplace accident in 1999 and she says since then there have been 1,400 workplace deaths in Alberta.

“I’m here to say we deserve better and Albertans deserve better. There have been 140 workplace deaths in 2009 and that is 140 too many,” Hamilton said.

Organizer Rosemary Lindsay said she can relate to this year’s theme ‘Life is not the same’ because she was injured at work and her life has been forever changed.

Both the Alberta Liberal Party and the New Democrats called on the province to release a list of employers putting workers at risk.
