Langara design students make over Chinatown windows

Chinatown shoppers may find themselves doing double takes this holiday season as some store windows got a free facelift thanks to Langara College design students.

The Seasonal Window Display Contest saw six businesses in the 100 block of East Pender Street get their window displays redesigned by the students.

The winning display, at the window of the Peking Lounge furniture shop, was announced Thursday afternoon. It was picked by members of the Chinatown Business Improvement Association Society (VCBIA).

“The process was so much fun,” said Elyse Dodge, a member of the winning team. “We went from concepts right through execution. It all came together so well.”

Dodge accepted the award along with fellow team member Evan Cunningham.

Frances Wong, vice-president of the VCBIA, was impressed with the skill level of the students and the improvements made to the neighbourhood.

“The participation was awesome,” he said. “It’s a new look for Chinatown.”

The VCBIA and Langara College said they plan to collaborate on an Olympic-themed design project for Chinatown shop windows in January, ahead of the Chinese New Year.
