Larry David is as devoted a New York Yankees fan as you’re ever likely to meet. There’s just one problem: the Curb Your Enthusiasm writer and star works and lives in Los Angeles.
Over the last few days the Brooklyn native has actually been back in New York City to promote the upcoming new season of his hit HBO comedy. On Monday, though, he found the time to visit Yankee Stadium to watch the New York Yankees beat the Kansas City Royals 11-3. During this game Aaron Judge smashed his 49th and 50th home runs of the season to surpass Mark McGwire’s record of 49 in a rookie season.
When I had the chance to speak to Larry David at the premiere for Curb Your Enthusiasm season 9, I immediately asked him for his thoughts on Aaron Judge. Always the cynic, David couldn’t help but bring up Judge’s slump in July and August, insisting that he knew Judge shouldn’t go to the Home Run Derby in Miami in July as he had foreseen that it would “screw” up his form.
“I was so worried [about him]. I knew that Home Run Derby was going to screw him up. I knew it. I told everybody, ‘He shouldn’t do this.’ And I was right. It screwed him up.”
However, after watching Judge work his magic against the Kansas City Royals, which means that he has now scored 13 home runs and 26 RBIs in the month of September alone, David is certain that he is back on right track, noting, “Now it looks like he is getting it back.”
Not that David is getting carried away with Judge’s performance. Because when I asked the comedian what heights could Judge go on to reach, David simply responded, “I just want him to beat Minnesota.”
The New York Yankees are likely to play the Minnesota Twins in the playoffs in the next couple of days, while you can see Larry David in Curb Your Enthusiasm season 9 when it airs on HBO on Sunday, October 1 at 10 p.m. EST.
