At least six shooting incidents around the city within the span of a few hours before dawn Tuesday left two people dead and six injured overnight.
Police said the spate of shootings began at around 10 p.m. Monday night after a party in Canarsie erupted in gunfire.
One 18-year-old woman was shot in the arm and 24-year-old man was shot in the back while at the party on East 96th Street. Police recovered a .38 caliber revolver at the scene but were unable to trace it back to its owner.
Another 18-year-old woman had her leg grazed by a bullet nearby the party, apparently after an unknown black male fire his weapon.
All three victims are expected to survive and police are still investigating the incident.
Two other shootings in the borough were more deadly.
One 20-year-old was shot dead at around 2:20 a.m. and found bleeding at the intersection of 49th Street and Fifth Avenue in Sunset Park.
The victim was rushed to Lutheran Medical Center where he was later declared dead. No arrests by late Tuesday morning.
About an hour later and across the borough, police said that an 18-year-old male attempted to carjack a driver in East New York at around 3:15 a.m.
The driver shot one of two males suspected in the attempted hold up, fatally wounding the teen — identified as Manuel Ocampo — after shooting him in the head. The second suspect was taken into custody but no arrests have been made.
Across the East River, north Manhattan police also responded to three separate but non-fatal shootings.
One man was shot in the leg at around 2 a.m. while he walked on West 126th Street in Harlem. A second unrelated shooting at around 2:15 a.m. left another man in Morningside Heights with a gunshot wound to his thigh. Both are expected to survive and police are still looking for the shooters in both incidents.
The final reported shooting occurred at around 3:35 a.m. along West 204th Street in Inwood, where police said one Hispanic male shot a 25-year-old Hispanic male in a suspected robbery attempt. The unidentified suspect fled on foot.
The victim was rushed to Lincoln Hospital and is expected to recover.
“It was a long, very good weather weekend, and we tend to have spikes in violence associated with the many social gatherings… but overall crime is still down,” Police Commissioner Bill Bratton said about the weekend’s violence at an unrelated press conference.
“Crime is going to spike from time to time and that’s the reality,” he added. “It doesn’t stay low all the time everywhere.”
