Learning to live on food bank hamper

This week, my fiancée and I are walking in the footsteps of thousands of real Calgary families, dealing with the same challenge they face every day in our great city.

We’ll be building our meals for one week on the wares contained in a Calgary Food Bank hamper provided to families like ours when times of need arise.

Called A Week in Their Kitchen, this initiative is done in conjunction with the kickoff to Husky Help the Hungry Week for the Calgary Food Bank — and I, other media colleagues and a handful of Calgarians have been asked to blog about the experience.

Amidst angst, trepidation and a selfish fear of appearing at the Calgary Food Bank in need of a hamper, I mustered the courage needed to go in and collect the food.

The challenge is simple in words, but so complex upon further reflection late last night: Feed your family on the food provided in a hamper from the food bank. Nothing else.

We’ll find a way to do this, as so many Calgary families do.
