‘Less gas, more ass’ at nude bike ride

You might be in for a big surprise if you’re out and about in Halifax on Saturday afternoon.

Cyclists from across Canada will disrobe and take to the streets as part of the World Naked Bike Ride.

Halifax is one of the Canadian cities taking part, joining Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto and Vancouver.

This will be the second straight year Halifax riders participate.

“Our tagline this year is less gas, more ass,” said Halifax event organizer Tom MacDonald.

If you’ve found a playing card with a naked bike ride sticker — a promotional gimmick from organizers — in the spokes of your bicycle recently then you already know about the event.

For the past five years. bikers in cities worldwide have slipped off their clothes, donned body paint and hopped on their rides to raise awareness about biking issues. The ride has also been used to celebrate body image, raise
awareness about body painting artists, as well as developing cycling communities
in different cities.

“It was originally conceived as a way to demonstrate to people the vulnerability of bicycle riders to cars,” MacDonald said. “Obviously you can’t be any more vulnerable if you’re naked.”

MacDonald is expecting at least 30 participants, but hoping for more.

“It kind of depends on the weather I think.”
