Liberal Party Leader Stephen McNeil spent Tuesday on the campaign trail selling the idea of lowering the gas tax and deregulating the industry.
McNeil wants to cut provincial tax on gas by one cent per litre each year for the next four years. The total cost over four years is costed at $166 million.
McNeil says the move will make the province more competitive. He said gas regulation, which is supported by the NDP and Progressive Conservatives, has also been a burden.
“Businesses small and large across Nova Scotia have been facing a true competitive disadvantage because of this failed Conservative-adopted New Democratic policy,” McNeil in a media release.
The other parties say regulation has given stability to consumers and cut down on erratic price changes. They also criticize the Liberals plan to cut the gas tax as being too expensive to afford.
