Fisheries Minister Sterling Belliveau’s absence from a committee meeting shows an NDP double standard, Liberal MLA Andrew Younger alleged yesterday.
“When the NDP were in opposition … (they) repeatedly called on ministers to appear before committees,” said Younger.
“And yet we received a letter … from (Belliveau’s) deputy minister saying that it’s government policy for ministers not to attend committee meetings.”
Younger said Belliveau originally agreed to attend the Economic Development Committee meeting, but days later he sent a letter to the committee informing them he would not be able to make it.
“The appropriate people were at the table today to represent the department,” said Department of Agriculture spokeswoman Celeste Sulliman, speaking on behalf of Belliveau.
