Librarian hit with sex charges

Calgary police have confirmed a school employee in her 40s was charged with sexual assault for allegedly carrying on a relationship with a 15-year-old male student at her school, and was then re-arrested after she allegedly ignored a court order to discontinue the relationship.

According to police, the woman was arrested and charged after police learned of the alleged relationship.

The woman — whose name is not being released, nor is the school where she worked, to protect the identity of the victim — was subsequently re-arrested and charged in September for allegedly breaching conditions of her release, which included having no contact with the victim.

The case was not made public at the time of the arrest.

“Because it was an isolated case, specific to that relationship, it wasn’t felt there was a risk to other members of the public or any other children,” said CPS duty Insp. Nina Vaughan.

Calgary Board of Education spokesman Ted Flitton said the school board is taking the situation very seriously.

“Our core business is education, but our highest priority is the safety of students, staff and the entire school,” said Flitton.

Flitton said the suspect was immediately taken from situations involving young people and hasn’t returned to work.
