Foxborough rescheduling trick-or-treating to the day before Halloween to avoid Sunday’s Patriots game was recently Sports Illustrated’s weekly “Sign of the Apocalypse.”
Tonight’s final gubernatorial debate was rescheduled to account for Tuesday night’s Celtics home opener, which is Shaquille O’Neal’s debut in green and LeBron James’s debut with Miami.
“It’s common knowledge that you don’t mess with certain dates, Super Bowl is the most prevalent,” said Dave Czesniuk of Northeastern University’s Sport in Society. “I noticed a significant shift over the last 10 years. We used to watch 10 minutes of sports on the nightly news. Now ESPN is 24/7.”
Lynda Walsh, chair of the Foxborough Board of Selectmen, said trick-or-treating was rescheduled for safety reasons and they never schedule night meetings around sporting events.
“If there’s a playoff game, we try to get business done as soon as we can,” she said.
The media consortium sponsoring tonight’s gubernatorial debate agreed it didn’t make sense to compete with the Celtics.
“There are two things in Massachusetts people are passionate about: sports and politics.?And the consortium didn’t want sports fans to have to choose,” said Lauren Griffiths of WCVB Channel 5, which is hosting the debate.
