Fancy a threesome? Dimo Trifonov, the man behind dating app 3nder, thinks if you do, you should be able to find one as easily as any other hook-up. The spinoff of location-based hook-up apps like Tinder and Grindr aims to remove the seedy stigma attached to threesomes and connect like-minded people.

The app, which is connected through Facebook, allows individuals or couples to upload photos of themselves. It is still in the funding stage, but with 23,000 subscribers, it won’t be long before “3” really does become the magic number.

We talk to Trifonov about what’s in store.

Do you and your girlfriend have threesomes?

I haven’t had a threesome yet. We were just curious about it and that’s how the whole thing started. It should be something that doesn’t make you feel like a sexual freak.

How does this differ from current hook-up sites?

We Googled threesome hook-up sites and found really dodgy, suspicious websites that wanted credit card details. The whole look of those websites was just awful, and I thought this thing should be something beautiful and simple and seen as a positive thing. I thought I could change that with an app where you can login with Facebook — later, we want to introduce phone verification.

Are you trying to make threesomes more socially acceptable?

In a way, yeah. It’s something that exists and we’re making people who are both active and curious individuals more comfortable. There’s an app for everything, so here it is. So many people have thought about it and we’ve already had 23,000 people sign up in 12 days.

Why do threesomes get bad press?

I’m not sure but I’ve noticed that people talk about it freely on Twitter and Facebook, and the press is more comfortable writing articles about this kind of thing because it’s an app. Social media is changing attitudes. I didn’t have to write a press release, it was from just one tweet that the whole thing went viral.

Where are most of your subscribers coming from?

It’s international. I think that the majority of visits are coming from the U.S. Most people tell me Germany is the right market for it because they’re more open-minded about this kind of thing.

Is it a positive that we’re becoming more sexually active?

I think so. The app helps you get rid of the people you’re not interested in and you can also state what you’re looking for (sex, age, gender, sexual interests). This gives you the option to select your partners and avoid getting drunk and ending up in a stranger’s bed.
