4 Electives we love

In hunting for the most unique college courses, we found a half-dozen “Intro to Fly-Fishing” classes (who knew?) and enough micro-brewing seminars to fill Busch Stadium with weissbier. Here are four truly one-of-a-kind classes.

1 Jigsaw Puzzles 101
Case Western Reserve University (Cleveland, Ohio)
This one examines the art and science of the puzzle from cultural, mathematical and military perspectives.

2 Bloodstain Pattern Analysis
Hilbert College (Hamburg, N.Y.)
This forensic science looks at the angle, color and pattern of a bloodstain, one of the most important aspects of the crime-scene puzzle. Students get experience at a mock scene and study some very detailed police reports.

3 History of Beer, Coffee, Water and Breast milk
Drake University (Des Moines, Iowa)
This course investigates the history of these liquids from a legal perspective and promises to explore the ramifications of what we drink from cradle to grave.

4 Psychology 386: Being a Cool Dude
Clark University (Worcester, Mass.)
Dr. Michael Bamberg takes students from the birth of the “cool guy” psychology of the 1920s to the rebirth of cool in our everyday lives.
