A badass new Marc by Marc Jacobs

Marc By Marc Jacobs - Runway - Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Fall 2014

Pier 36 has been transformed into what looks like a sk8r’s paradise for Marc by Marc Jacobs, with enormous wooden ramps decorating the cavernous space. This has always been a big show. But the buzz in the air is even higher due to the fact that this will be the first collection from Luella Bartley and Katie Hillier under a new chapter for Marc Jacobs’ empire, one in which he’s back in New York full-time and preparing the company for an IPO. And we all know how much the fashion world loves change. It isn’t Fashion Week without a splashy headline about a new creative director’s debut.

The sk8r girls I was expecting to see didn’t show up. Neither did the moody, slightly staid, collegiate kids that defined the Marc by Marc Jacobs collections in seasons’ past. The fall ’14 girl is all flamboyant sportiness, dressed for a club night in a mix of ninja and BMX gear. And the clothes looked as wild as that sounds. The clothes aren’t easy to pull off; it will take a special kind of girl to wear a long sleeved, belted tunic with a pair of parachute pants. But the looks stand out because they aren’t safe, giving the week of pleasant, contemporary clothes a much needed kick in the pants — with a very big shoe. Read more on www.modmods.com

The scene
Solange Knowles is in the house. And Marc Jacobs and Sofia Coppola, long-time besties, are reunited and chatting it up front row, awww.

The major trends
Plays on volume — blanket-style wraps, layering and wide leg trousers.

What this will mean for your wardrobe
Judging by my social media feeds the shoes were the most memorable takeaway from the show. The more ‘out there’ the sneaker the better.
