Boy Meets Girl: Rebecca Minkoff

Rebecca Minkoff - Runway - Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Fall 2014

FRIDAY

3:25 p.m.
I hobble into the Rebecca Minkoff show just in the nick of time, and my recently fractured ankle has elicited a rare sympathy from the usually chilly fashion crowd. “You go, girl,” one of the young women scanning tickets tells me. “That’s dedication!” says another, as bloggers politely make way for me to squeeze into my seat.

3:30A young woman wearing a boxy teal shift and sparkly platform loafers comes out and starts singing in a pleasantly gravel, with some beats emanating from backstage. “Remember when Janelle Monae performed last season?” someone behind me whispers to her seatmate. Minkoff always has the best music.

The first look is a standout: a bleach-haired Soo Joo sporting a leather-and-shearling jacket with a metallic knit pencil skirt slit up-to-there. Indeed, Minkoff seems to have spiced up her trademark hot-tomboy look this season with some “American Hustle” sizzle: Think ‘70s gold lame loungewear worn with striped mannish blazers or flowing chiffon printed dresses paired with structured coats and hiking boots.

The Scene:

So. Many. It. Girls. “Girls”Zosia Mamet, Anna Sophia Robb of “The Carrie Diaries,” Anna Kendrick, and Carrie Underwood are all seated front row. And across the way? Models-off-duty Coco Rocha and Agyness Deyn (who has traded her peroxide pixie cut for honeyed tresses).

The Playlist:

Aluna George provided the live music, with Aluna Francis serenading the crowd from the runway and partner George Reid providing the beats backstage.

Major Trends
Flowy dresses, leather jackets, sweatshirts, lounge pants, jewel tones

What this will mean for your wardrobe
Dont put away your pretty spring dresses for fall—instead roughen them up with your favorite leather jacket, hoodie, or menswear blazer for some contrast.
