Facebook buys the smartphone activity app Moves

The world's most popular social network acquired the popular fitness tracking app on Thursday.

The world's most popular social network has just snapped up Moves, the smartphone activity app.

Moves made the announcement on Thursday, saying that the app would remain a standalone product and that the company was "delighted" to be joining Facebook.

"Now, we're joining Facebook's talented team to work on building and improving their products and services with a shared mission of supporting simple, efficient tools for more than a billion people," the company said in astatement.

Launched in January 2013,Movesis a fitness tracking app that functions as an activity diary with the user's smartphone automatically doing the recording. For instance, it automatically recognizes the difference between walking, running and riding a bike. It has proved a huge hit among iPhone owners since landing on the App Store.

This is the third headline-grabbing acquisition that Facebook has made in as many months.

As well as Moves and its parent company, Finland-based ProtoGeo Oy, the company has also snapped up WhatsApp and virtual reality technology firm Oculus since February.
