Fig Newtons undergo reinvention

Whether you grew up hating them or they conjure up sweet memories of part of a parent-packed school lunch, most people have a love ’em or hate ’em reaction when it comes to Fig Newtons. But today, Nabisco is rebranding the treat by dropping the “Fig” and just calling them “Newtons.”

According to Ad Week, the reason behind the name change is that Nabisco doesn’t think figs are cool enough to appeal to a wide variety of people. They do have a point; when was the last time you heard kids talk about craving figs?

For Nabisco’s part, the company says their reasoning is that Newtons don’t just come in a fig flavor. Hey, there’s strawberry, too.
