Diet avocados: A food that no one asked for, but is now a thing anyway

Diet Avocado Eurobanan

A regular diet of guacamole and avocado toast might do a number on your wallet, but a Spanish company wants to make that habit a little less damaging for your waistline.

Spanish company Eurobanan is launching Isla Bonita Avocado Light, a “milder” and “juicier” avocado that contains 30 percent less fat that’s “ideal for the preparation of smoothies, cold soup, gazpachos, cocktails,” and other dishes “throughout the day,” the company said in a press release. It’s even designed to ripen faster and spoil slower, meaning you won’t have to throw the expensive fruit away as often as you do now.

Aren’t avocados healthy already? Do I really need a diet avocado?

Yes! Avocados are one of those foods that are both healthy and delicious. A whole avocado clocks in at 322 calories, according to the USDA National Nutrient Database, with a huge helping of 20 different vitamins and minerals and a little over 29 grams of fat.

And the fat in avocados is mostly comprised of oleic acid, a monounsaturated fatty acid shown to help reduce inflammation, cholesterol and has even been shown to help prevent cancer. So, all of the fat to avoid in your diet, this isn’t one of them.

Of course, the creation of Avocado Light is more of a marketing gimmick to appeal to the people who want to avoid fat in any form, though the company claims that their avocados are “still rich in monounsaturated fats. The difference is that it has 30% less.”

Want an avocado light? Book your trip to Spain now

Don’t throw out your non-diet avocados just yet. Eurobanan plans to only sell their designer avocados in Spain for the time being, meaning that you’ll have to go a lot further than Whole Foods to get your fix of avocado light toast.

But there’s no need: Just enjoy your full-fat avos in moderation — and besides, you’re only saving 32 calories by eating a whole light avocado. Hardly worth the cost of the flight, right?
