Coffee company recalls brew made with undeclared Viagra-like ingredient

Food Recall Coffee Viagra

Coffee fan? Us too. In fact, we can’t imagine making it through the Monday morning grind without a cup (or, sigh, three). As for using the stuff for a Friday night aphrodisiac? Not exactly. But for those hoping to use their caffeine jolt with a side of, well, arousal…they’re out of luck, today, as a Texas-based coffee company Bestherbs Coffee LLC has recalled all of its New Kopi Jantan Tradisional Natural Herbs Coffee. Marketed as a “male enhancement” product, purchasers likely weren’t aware that this so-called “natural herbs coffee” actually had some potent ingredients omitted from the label.

Most prominently, the FDA lab for the U.S. Food and Drug administration found the product contained desmethyl carbodenafil, which the FDA reports is structurally similar to the active ingredient, sildenafil, found in Viagra. Though customers buying a coffee marketed for “male enhancement” might be happily surprised by the outcome of a cup or two with this hidden ingredient, there are real risks. This unlisted ingredient could potentially interact with some prescription drugs that treat various disorders like diabetes, high cholesterol, heart disease and more.

The recall issued by the FDA also states that undeclared milk was also found in the coffee, which could post a serious risk to those with allergies or severe sensitivity.

Have some of their java lying around and not sure what to do? According to the FDA release, “Consumers with questions regarding this recall can contact Bestherbs Natural Coffee at 817-903-2288 or Albertyee.abc@hotmail.com, Monday through Friday 9am to 5pm CST. Consumers should contact their physician or healthcare provider if they have experienced any problems that may be related to taking or using this drug product.” As of yet, no illnesses as a result of consuming this brew have been reported. Talk about a wake-up call, folks.

Now, coffee lovers, we realize that’s a lot to take in. So, go ahead and excuse yourself with an invigorating cuppa in peace. If you’re looking for a legal buzz (and in the right state), maybe try out this eco- and 420-friendly cannabis Keurig-compatible coffee instead.
